Is hypnosis safe? Regulated?
As a certified hypnotherapist since 2006, I follow the guidelines set forth by the National Guild of Hypnotherapists, founded in 1951, the oldest and largest hypnosis organization of its kind.  Professional membership in the NGH signifies that an individual possesses specific qualities, agrees to abide by a strict code of ethics, and will pursue continuing education studies for annual recertification.

Hypnosis is officially recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, and the British Medical Association.   An increasing number of physicians are using hypnosis to ease patients through angioplasty, chemotherapy, breast biopsy, childbirth, and dental procedures.

“If somebody told you there was a medication that could treat 100 different conditions, didn’t require a prescription, was free, and had no bad side effects, you wouldn’t believe them,” says Harvard Medical School psychologist Carol Ginandes, PhD.  “I don’t want to sound like a snake oil salesman, because hypnosis is not a magic wand.  But it should be made available as a supplementary treatment for all patients who could benefit.  Right Now.”

What is hypnosis and how does it work?
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, where the subconscious level of the mind is open to receive positive, constructive, goal oriented suggestions. As our waking state beta brain waves slow to alpha waves during the hypnosis procedure, our conscious and subconscious minds communicate differently.  As this occurs, buried information or experiences which may be the cause of troublesome disorders can be brought to light, reducing or resolving them.  Also, new brain technology shows that hypnosis alters the way sensory messages are received in the brain and experienced in the body.  Recently, researchers found that hypnosis actually blocks pain signals from getting to the part of brain responsible for conscious perception of discomfort.

Although researchers cannot fully explain exactly why hypnosis works, they do know that 75 to 90% of us can be hypnotized.  As a person is guided by a trained hypnotherapist, they neither fall asleep, nor act against their own wishes.  Psychologists describe hypnosis as an altered state of mind in which one’s normal skepticism is largely suspended, allowing a person to focus attention on a single image, and to become more open to suggestions they are assisted in creating for themselves.  Some have referred to it as daydreaming with a purpose, and describe it as similar to the absorption you experience when reading a good novel, watching an engrossing movie, or listening so intently to the car radio that you arrive home without a clue as to how you got there.

What can I expect from hypnosis?
There is no surrender of mind or control in hypnosis.  A person who does not want to be hypnotized cannot be hypnotized or be induced to do or say anything which violates personal standards of behavior or integrity.  There is neither magic nor voodoo involved.  Hypnosis involves guided concentration.  This guidance may be provided by a qualified practitioner, or in the case of self-hypnosis, by the individual client.  Self-hypnosis, which can be taught by a properly certified hypnotherapist and learned by virtually any client, can provide the recipient with a lifetime of benefit.

Your first visit with Dr. D’Anna will be explanatory and exploratory.  After discussing your interests, desires, and specific measurable goals, we will determine if it is worthwhile to proceed.  The first session will include accurately designed personalized programming, acceptable to your subconscious that can then be retained and acted upon in a manner leading to full achievement of your goals.
