Although there are many ways of practicing yoga, most individuals begin on the physical level, by practicing asanas, or postures, or sequences of body movements. Today, there are many different styles of physical yoga to choose from, depending on our goal. However, no matter which form we practice, or which path of yoga we adopt as our starting point, one of the most important choices we can make for ourselves is to just begin. Yoga, derived from with Sanskrit word, “yuk”, meaning yoke, is a unique method of integrating physical exercise with our breath, resulting in greater control over our own mind and emotions.
How does yoga benefit me?
The study and practice of yoga emphasizes all aspects of human life, to include our relationship with our self, with others, our behavior, our overall health, our breathing, and our meditation path. The extent to which we incorporate these aspects is at our personal will, and no one else’s. Yoga reinforces the positive aspects of who and how we are and supports our growth from where we are presently. The more we progress, the more we become aware of the holistic, interconnectedness nature of our body, breath, mind, and spirit. This unique approach to encouraging greater flexibility, centeredness, and equanimity supports our spiritual growth and is not intended to replace any religious convictions, only to fortify them.
